Street Division

photoThe Public Works Department Street Division consists of fourteen (14) employees whose overall purpose and mission is to provide general maintenance to streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, storm drains, ditches as well as maintenance of city owned right of ways.

The Street Division is responsible for maintaining over seventy-five (75) miles of City and State streets within the city limits by performing such work as pothole, pavement, and utility cut repairs.  Installing, cleaning and realigning driveway pipes as well as storm drain pipe repair and installation.

The Street Division also sweeps city streets that have curb and gutters and flushes those that have no curb and gutter.  In 2017, the City purchase a new street sweeper at a cost of $232,143 to help keep the city streets cleaner.

Street signage and traffic regulatory signs fall under the auspices of the Street Division as well.  This includes:

  • Replacing missing street name signs
  • Replacing damaged street name signs.
  • Replacing traffic regulatory signs such as Stop, Yield, No Right Turn, Speed Limit
  • Traffic signal lights owned by the City.
Citizens can report problems or missing signs to the Public Works Department by e-mail or by calling our office.  Go to Public Works Forms to fill out work order for working needing to be done by the Street Division.  E-mail for to the Director, Administrative Secretary or Street Supervisor.

The Street Division performs snow and ice removal for the entire street system.  Henderson is one of a select number of cities in our population group that regularly removes snow and ice from all city streets.  A more typical approach is to clear just the most traveled streets.  When necessary, this service is rendered around the clock.

The Street Division repairs and replaces sidewalks throughout the city on an as needed basis.  Tree roots are removed and replacement sidewalks poured by staff members within the Street Division or outside contractors.

The Street Division staff removes dead and diseased trees within the city right of ways along city streets.  Large trees are contracted out and stumps are ground when trees are removed.  Some mulch is left at the stump site, alum is mixed with mulch and grass seed is sown.
The Street Division performs special tasks throughout the year for other departments as well as fund raising events.   The staff works with the Police Department, Chamber of Commerce, Fire Department and Civic Groups to barricade streets for numerous special events like the Christmas Parade.  Requests may be made to the City Manager for permission to temporarily close a city street or use city owned property.  The request must be in writing and on a city form for such purpose.  The form may be obtained by calling the City Manager’s Office at 252-430-5702.

The Street Division lends support to other departments within the city when needed (haul dirt, rock, collect trash, remove brush, etc.)
The Grounds Maintenance Crew falls within the Street Division as well.  The grounds crew trims trees in the right of way, cuts grass on city owned property, cut grass on city right of ways, cleans grass from sidewalk cracks and curb and gutters. Sprays weed killer around traffic islands, and use boom mower to cut back overhanging trees in roadways and open right of ways for large traffic.  The crew picks up litter along roadways, collect tires left on right of ways, clean storm drains and catch basin of litter and debris.  The crew prunes trees along city streets, mulch and weeds flower beds and shrubs as well as assist other departments when manpower is needed. The crew of five (5) employees consists of one (1) crew leader, two (2) maintenance worker II’s and one (1) maintenance worker I.
